hook aside for the time
being, since we are to have other books as
textbooks. I was a bit surprised and
somewhat disappointed at this. For, if I was to
become a pastor, I surely must have to study the
Bible. Then came a disappointment of another
nature. The admission fee was five dollars and
fail tuition sixteen dollars, and I had only
twenty dollars. Hence I had to borrow one dollar
to enroLl. But the predicament was soon overcome,
for I had a good friend who lent me a dollar...
From
the first day in school I was placed in the
second class. Why, I dont know. Dr. Beck
said I was quite well versed in Swedish history,
Swedish literature, and in Christianity. He had
seen articles that I had occasionally written in
Framät, a Swedish weekly published in Brooklyn.
My course was very heavy, as I had to carry
subjects that belonged to the first class. . . .
How I worked and struggled with my English (and
do to this very day)! The worst was with the
Latin lessons, when I had to make the
translations. Of course, all subjects were taught
in English, except Swedish history, literature,
and Christianity. But I managed.
